HPD: Gunman arrested after shooting at police helicopter in SE Houston

2 Pope County deputies, 1 Starbuck police officer shot in Cyrus during arrest

Houston police said a man has been arrested after he opened fire on a woman, then decided to shoot at a police helicopter.

It started in southeast Houston in a neighborhood on Crenshaw Road near Burke Road just before 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

We’re told police received a call about a man shooting at a mother. When a police helicopter arrived to survey the scene, the man started shooting at it.

Thankfully, police said the man missed and that no one was hurt in the shooting. We’re told the shooter was arrested. No word yet on any possible charges.

‘Massive crime scene’: 2 Phoenix Police officers injured, 2 people and suspect dead in shooting near I-17

PHOENIX – A Sunday night shooting broke out in Phoenix near the I-17 and the police department says two officers were injured, two other people at the scene were killed, three others were injured and the suspect is dead.

The shooting happened near I-17 and Deer Valley Road around 8:45 p.m. when a two-officer unit responded to the area and were met with gunfire.

They “engaged” with the suspect, who then retreated. The unidentified suspect was then found dead, and it’s not known how he died.

The department says the officers are expected to be OK.

“Once again, two Phoenix Police officers have been shot,” said Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams in a press conference at the hospital just hours after the shooting on Aug. 28. “Thankfully, those two officers are recovering and are talking. So they’re in good spirits.”

Two others who were at the scene, who are not law enforcement, died as a result of the incident, Williams said. They haven’t been identified.

Three others who were also injured in the shooting were taken to the hospital.

“This is a massive crime scene,” Williams continued. “There’s still a lot of work to do out at that crime scene.”

Williams remarked on violence against police, asking when will the violence end, and that this is another example of innocent bystanders getting killed and hurt by gun violence.

Huntington Beach mourns police officer killed in helicopter crash

A cold rain fell in Santa Ana early Tuesday afternoon as mourners gathered for a procession to honor Huntington Beach Officer Nicholas Vella, who was killed in a police helicopter crash over the weekend.

Vella, 44, was the passenger in the police helicopter that crashed in Newport Harbor near the Lido Peninsula on Saturday night. He was a 14-year veteran of the Huntington Beach Police Department and was previously a member of the Laguna Beach Police Department.

Vella is survived by his wife, Kristi Tovar, and a teenage daughter.

A second officer involved in the crash was released from the hospital Sunday and was identified as the pilot. An investigation into the cause of the crash is underway by the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration, though Police Department spokeswoman Jennifer Carey said Tuesday that it could be up to a year before the cause could be known for certain.

The helicopter was en route to provide assistance in what is known as a “disturbance fight call” from Newport Beach, which contracts for aerial services as needed from the neighboring city.
