SALEM, Ore. — Salem police shot and killed a juvenile shooting suspect they were trying to arrest Wednesday evening and during an exchange of gunfire with the suspect, one officer was wounded, the Salem Police Department said.
The officer was taken to Salem Health and was expected to make a full recovery, police said.
Police were trying to arrest the suspect in a March 18 shooting near the Salem Center Mall. In that shooting, a teenage boy was shot and wounded. The shooting that day brought a lot of police to the mall and the surrounding area.
On Wednesday, around 5 p.m., police said they were trying to arrest the shooting suspect, who they only identified as a juvenile male, in the 4900 block of Oak Park Drive NE. Officers had found him in a parked car and when they tried to contact him, police said he drew a gun. An exchange of gunfire occurred and the suspect died at the scene, police said.
The Salem Police Department identified the officers involved in the shooting as Brian Frazzini, Erick Hernandez, Ryan Morris, and Adam Waite.
The officers have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure for police shootings.
Several agencies are on scene investigating an officer-involved shooting along OH-48 in Warren County Tuesday evening.
According to early reports, Clearcreek Township officers were responding to a domestic call at local residence where the suspect was ramming his wife’s car with an ATV.
According to police, the suspect shot a responding officer and another officer returned fire, striking and killing the man.
It is unclear what initially led up to the shooting.
The officer was shot in the head and transported to Miami Valley Hospital near Dayton.
He is in critical but stable condition, police said.
“The suspect shot one of my officers, he’s in stable but critical condition in the ICU,” Clearcreek Township Police Chief John Terrill said. “The individual that shot my officer was shot by one of our other officers and killed. So BCI is here processing our scene, we’ll be doing that through the night. The officer was careflighted to the hospital.”
