Unvaccinated NYPD officers must wear masks or face ‘disciplinary action’: report

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — The NYPD will penalize unvaccinated officers who don’t wear masks while on the job, amid efforts counter the highly infectious delta variant strain and lackluster department vaccination rates.

The New York Post reports the department made the guidance known Tuesday evening.

“Members who do not have official proof of COVID-19 vaccination on file with the Medical Division must wear a face covering at all times while working, whether indoors or outside, including while driving in department vehicles,” the bulletin said.

Cops will need to show proof of the vaccination with the NYPD’s Medical Division, allowing vaccinated officers to “temporarily” remove their mask while engaging in “reasonable activities” like eating, drinking, adjusting their mask due to temperature.

The department’s efforts to control their officers’ mask use comes as 43% of civilian and uniformed officers were vaccinated as of July.

Those who fail to meet the new guidance could face “disciplinary action,” the bulletin adds. However, it is not known what that specific punishment could be or if vaccinated cops could face a punishment.

Sergeants, directors or those with higher ranks are tasked with enforcing the policy.

The department did not respond immediately to the Post for comment.
