A Florida police officer shot and killed a man who stabbed the officer in the face at a gas station Thursday morning, authorities said.
A man identified as Benjamin Joseph Remley, 36, of Deltona, was pronounced dead at a Daytona Beach hospital, according to a police news release. Florida Department of Corrections records show Remley was previously sentenced to three years in prison for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was released in February.
Remley pulled a knife from his pocket and slashed the officer along his left upper jaw line, officials said. The officer then pulled his gun from its holster and fired twice, striking Remley under the armpit, authorities said.
The officer, whose name wasn’t immediately released, was expected to make a full recovery, police said. State law enforcement officials are investigating the shooting.
