Los Angeles police have identified the suspected killer of 24-year-old Brianna Kupfer, a UCLA grad student stabbed to death at her furniture store job last week.
Shawn Laval Smith, 31, should be considered armed and dangerous, according to the LAPD.
Los Angeles County Jail records show Covina police arrested him on Oct. 27, 2020 on a misdemeanor charge. He was released on $1,000 bail. The outcome of that case was not immediately clear.
A law enforcement source tells Fox News Digital that Smith has a rap sheet that spans both coasts, including in San Francisco and South Carolina. His most recent charge is allegedly for shoplifting — and he landed up in jail in San Mateo after allegedly assaulting a police officer. Full story below

Let me make it clear up front that I have no problem with killing a terrorist. But the death of Malik Akram, who had been holding four hostages at a synagogue north of Dallas, does not make sense. The FBI Hostage Rescue Team did not follow the standard operating procedure for conducting an assault.
I have more than 35 years experience with counter-terrorism and police training. I was the Deputy Director of the Anti-Terrorism Assistance Training Program when I was at the Department of State. There is a checklist that SWAT teams follow in evaluating a threat and deciding on a course of action.
When you have a hostage incident the prime objective is to end the situation peacefully with no harm to the hostages. If the hostage taker escalates the threat to the hostages or begins to physically harm them, that should trigger an assault. But if the hostages escape and are no longer in jeopardy and there are no other civilians at risk, there is no need to put the lives of SWAT officers in danger by conducting an armed assault. Anytime you are firing automatic weapons and using flash bang grenades in a confined space, the good guys can be wounded or killed. Using force is a last resort when all other options are closed.
The movie Joe Hoft posted this morning of the immediate moments before the assault was launched shows the hostages running from the building. You also see the failed hostage taker poke his head out the door with a pistol in his hand. Malik Akram was now alone in the synagogue. WARWICK, R.I. – Four officers opened fire on a man accused of using a knife to stab one of the officers in the lobby of police headquarters.
According to a news release, the incident occurred Friday afternoon shortly after police left a briefing in their community room. While walking into the lobby, a group of Warwick police officers came across a 29-year-old male who police said wielded a knife.
Investigators said the man lunged at the group, thrusting the blade forward and striking one officer in the torso. But that officer’s bulletproof vest prevented the blade from causing any harm.
Meanwhile, the four officers — including the one who had been allegedly attacked — drew their weapons and shot the suspect. Police said they immediately gave medical aid to the suspect until paramedics transported him to a local hospital.
Police said he is in stable condition.
The officers involved with the shooting have been placed on leave, though the department described it as non-punitive. The shooting is under administrative review.
Rhode Island’s state police and attorney general will also investigate.

Killers weren’t arrested in more than half of the murders committed in the nation’s capital in 2021, according to one analysis – a figure that could worsen without major changes, given the nature of how homicides are solved, criminologists told Fox News Digital.
The main reason so few murder suspects were arrested is because of how far trust in the police dropped in the fallout after an officer killed George Floyd in May 2020, the criminologists said. Witnesses, as a result, became less willing to cooperate with detectives.
“If people are less confident in the police, want to have less contact with the police, they’re not going to be as cooperative,” a University of Missouri-St. Louis criminology professor, Richard Rosenfeld,told Fox News Digital.“The police therefore lose that valuable form of assistance as they’re trying to solve homicides.”
“The police can’t clear crimes on their own,” Rosenfeld continued. “Those of us who happened to witness the event are key ingredients in the ability of the police to clear a homicide or any other serious crime with an arrest.”
Deputy Shirley, 26, was in uniform working an off-duty security job at a used car lot located on Rockford Lane near Dover Road on Aug. 5, 2021, when he came under attack at approximately 2:30 a.m., WLKY reported.
He was sitting in his unmarked vehicle when an unidentified suspect suddenly walked up and shot him, LMPD Spokesperson Alicia Smiley told reporters shortly after the incident, according to WAVE.
JCSO Lieutenant Colonel Carl Yates said Deputy Shirley was transported to the University of Louisville Hospital and rushed into surgery, WLKY reported.
Deputy Shirley died of his wounds during the emergency procedure, according to the Courier Journal.
