NYPD widow Stephanie Diller delivers powerful eulogy at husbandโ€™s funeral

โ€œStephanie knew how good a man he was; Monday just proved it to the rest of the world.โ€โ€” Father Michael Duffy

Stephanie Diller stood before mourners at a funeral mass for her late husband Saturday morning in Massapequa. And she delivered a surprise eulogy about the love of her life, Jonathan Diller, who died a hero to New Yorkers.

In a composed but emotional delivery, she told those in the church that Jonathan had already been a hero to her and the coupleโ€™s 1-year-old son, Ryan. She stood up to speak because she wanted the world to know a bit more about Jonathan outside of his police uniform.

She recounted their courtship and marriage, spoke about how he would do anything for a laugh โ€” and that it was no surprise to her he was such a remarkable cop.

Because he was such a remarkable man.

โ€œThis is devastating,โ€ she said. โ€œItโ€™s a devastating, senseless and tragic loss for so many โ€ฆ Itโ€™s a shame that someone who brought so much positivity to the world was given such a negative ending.โ€

โ€œIt breaks my heart that Ryan was robbed of getting to grow up with his dad.โ€

She said Jonathanโ€™s most cherished role in life was that of a father.

โ€œI will never forget the look on his face when our son was born; I donโ€™t think we could ever achieve a greater happiness,โ€ she recalled.

โ€œAnd Jonathan was so excited that Ryanโ€™s first word was โ€˜Dada,โ€™ and I remember I would playfully try to get him to say โ€˜Mamaโ€™ instead,โ€ she said, fighting back tears. โ€œBut now I never want to stop hearing Ryan say Dada to me.

โ€œI couldnโ€™t have asked for a better partner to have a child with.โ€

As she spoke inside St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, some tens of thousands of police officers from across the U.S. stood at attention, not just outside the church, but for miles around.

โ€œOur lives were pretty much perfect until five days ago when our lives were changed forever,โ€ Stephanie continued inside, cameras rolling as her eulogy was broadcast across the nation.

โ€œIt breaks my heart that Ryan was robbed of getting to grow up with his dad,โ€ she said. โ€œBut I am eternally grateful that Jonathan made me Ryanโ€™s mother. Because his son is just like him, always making people smile.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s hard to imagine how long I have to wait to see Jonathanโ€™s again,โ€ she said. โ€œWhen the doors to heaven open for me one day I hope to see Jonathan there, looking at me just like he did on our wedding day.

โ€œJonathan, Ryan and I donโ€™t know how we are going to live without you. Rest in peace, Jonathan, the man who captured my heart and now all of New Yorkโ€™s.โ€

Jonathan Diller, 31, a three-year, decorated NYPD veteran from Massapequa Park was shot and killed in broad daylight during a traffic stop in Far Rockaway, Queens, on Monday.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams and Police Commissioner Edward Caban also delivered powerful speeches during a funeral mass presided over by the Rev. Michael Duffy.

Father Duffy had married the couple in 2019, when he was a pastor in Malverne.

โ€œTens of thousands outside are mourning a brother in arms, but Stephanie and Ryan are mourning their everything,โ€ Father Duffy said during a sermon that followed the Catholic Gospel reading.

โ€œStephanie, you have been an inspiration to everyone here and everyone outside since the very beginning of this disaster,โ€ he said, addressing Dillerโ€™s widow in the front row as she clutched her baby.

He then harkened back to their early romance and burgeoning love.

โ€œShe knew how good a man he was; Monday just proved it to the rest of the world.โ€

In his funeral speech, Mayor Adams called Diller โ€œa hero to all New Yorkers and all Americans.โ€

โ€œWe have to dig deep to find purpose through this pain,โ€ he said. โ€œThe outpouring of grief for this young man is real. And it is raw.โ€

Adams then recounted what had happened on Monday in Far Rockaway.

โ€œEven with the acknowledgment that he was shot, he fought and took the gun out of the hand of the person who would take his life,โ€ he said. โ€œHe saved lives.โ€

A retired NYPD member himself, Adams also made a pledge to the cityโ€™s police officers, saying the job is much harder now than it was when he wore the uniform, especially in the face of critics.

โ€œYouโ€™re inundated every day with those who are loud but they are not the majority,โ€ he said. โ€œNew Yorkers love you and and support you. Donโ€™t let anyone make you believe otherwise. The vast majority of New Yorkers share your visionโ€ of a city of โ€œlaw and order.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re going to make sure you have what you need to do your job,โ€ Adams pledged, โ€œmaking sure that violent career criminals are held accountable for their crimes.

โ€œPlease join us as we turn this painful moment into a purposeful moment.โ€

Stephanie Diller, in her remarks, also called for change, a change she said never came after two other NYPD officers, Jason Rivera and Wilbert Mora, were killed two years ago in New York.

โ€œHow many more police officers and how many families need to make the ultimate sacrifice before we start protecting them?โ€ Stephanie Diller said. โ€œI donโ€™t wish this type of pain on anyone. Jonathan lived his life doing good for people and itโ€™s now time for people to start doing good for all the officers he represents.โ€

Commissioner Caban, in his eulogy, announced a posthumous promotion for Diller to Detective 1st Grade โ€” to a standing ovation. Dillerโ€™s new shield number, he said, is 110, which is also Ryanโ€™s birthday.

โ€œWhat Jon loved most in life was being Ryanโ€™s dad,โ€ Caban said. โ€œAnd I promise you, he wonโ€™t miss a moment. On Ryanโ€™s first day of school, Jon will be there. When he picks up that first lacrosse stick, his first hockey stick, Jon will be there. When he brings home his first report card and it says โ€˜Ryan is just like his Dad,โ€™ Jon will be there.

โ€œAnd in your quiet moments โ€ฆ remember Jon was there always.โ€

Diller, of Massapequa Park, was a three-year NYPD veteran. He was shot while conducting a traffic stop. The fatal shot entered Dillerโ€™s torso, beneath his vest, police said.

He later died at Jamaica Hospital.

Guy Rivera, a 34-year-old Queens man with a lengthy rap sheet, was charged Monday morning with murder of a police officer, attempted murder and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, authorities said.

Police say Rivera was the passenger in a car driven by Lindy Jones, 41, when officer Diller and a second NYPD officer approached the car, which was idling at a bus stop around 5:50 p.m. Jones, of 45- 19 Rockaway Beach Boulevard in Queens, was charged with criminal possession of a weapon.

Citing law enforcement sources, the New York Post has reportied that the two men were โ€œbelieved to have been planning a robbery when Diller and other cops intervened.โ€

Diller was laid to rest Saturday afternoon at St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale.

Across the country, police forces are scrambling to keep their roll call numbers at full staff, but officials said they’ve been hit with challenges.

Burnout, low morale, and dejection have caused many cops, both long-time veterans and newcomers, to quit and change careers and recent public backlash against excessive police force has resulted in a drop in new applications, according to police officials.

In Philadelphia, the police force is facing a shortage of 600 officers, roughly 10% of its full force.

“It’s critical now,” Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw told ABC News of her force’s staffing levels. “It’s already critical, was critical a year ago.”

Handcuffed suspect shoots Denver officer while being removed from police vehicle at jail

A handcuffed suspect shot an officer in the neck as he exited a police vehicle to enter a detention center, Denver police said.

Officers pursued the suspect, believing he was driving a stolen vehicle. The suspect was able to elude officers for a bit, and began walking away from the vehicle when he was detained.

When officers confirmed the vehicle was stolen, they recovered a handgun and “large quantity of suspected narcotics” while taking him into custody.

During attempted removal of the suspect from the police vehicle at the downtown detention center, police say the suspect accessed another weapon that must have been concealed on him, and fired one round, striking an officer in the neck.

Officers returned fire, striking the suspect multiple times.

Both the suspect and officer were taken to the hospital. The suspect was listed in critical condition, while the officer is expected to make a recovery.ย

Virginia law enforcement worker killed in shootout with deputies after murdering family of teen he catfished, police say

A Virginia law enforcement worker has been killed in a shootout with deputies in California after he allegedly murdered the mother and grandparents of a teenage girl he catfished online, before trying to escape with the teen, police said on Sunday.

Officers were initially called to the La Sierra South neighborhood in Riverside, California, on Friday just after 11 a.m. to check on the welfare of a girl who appeared distressed while getting into a Red Kia Soul with a man, the Riverside Police Department said in a news release.

While officers were responding, police began to receive calls about a structural fire just a few houses away from where the welfare call was reported, they said.

The Riverside Fire Department arrived at the residence to find a fire on the first floor. When they made entry they discovered three adult victims lying on the ground, police said.

“Their bodies were pulled outside where it was determined they were victims of an apparent homicide,” the Riverside Police Department said, adding that firefighters were able to put the fire out.

During a preliminary investigation, detectives found out that the girl described in the initial welfare call had lived at the house where the three people were found dead, police said.

Authorities were also able to identify the man she was seen with as 28-year-old Austin Lee Edwards of North Chesterfield, Virginia, who detectives learned had worked for the Virginia State Police until being recently employed at the Washington County Sheriffโ€™s Office in the state of Virginia.

Milwaukee, WI โ€“ Police are looking for an alleged dating app predator who was see with a woman in a bar in South Milwaukee shortly before she lost consciousness and died.

South Milwaukee police said that 55-year-old Raina Reighns was seen in Scottyโ€™s Bar and Pizza several times on Nov. 17 with 52-year-old Timothy Olson, WDJT reported.

โ€œI was shocked because I saw her hours before and I knew it was out of the ordinary because she was here at my starting of the shift, which was at one and not at nighttime,โ€ Scottyโ€™s bartender, Nicole Fabian, recalled.

Later that night, Reighns and Olson went together to another bar, Powers on 10th, WISN reported.

Police said that shortly after they arrived, Reighns suffered a medical emergency.

Sam Anderson, the bartender at Powers on 10th, said Reighns and Olson were only in the bar for a couple of minutes and hadnโ€™t even taken the first sip from their drinks when the woman lost consciousness, WISN reported.

โ€œAs soon as she was down, I called 911,โ€ Anderson said. โ€œThe man she was with yelled that he was going to go get an inhaler.โ€

He said Olson left the bar as if to obtain medication for his date but never returned, WISN reported.

South Milwaukee police said Reighns was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital where she later died.
