Happening Now: State police give update after trooper is shot in Beaver County

New Orleans, LA – New Orleans Police Superintendent Shaun Ferguson called it “disheartening” that a police officer assigned to patrol the French Quarter last weekend notified his supervisor by text message that he was quitting the force and walked off the job.

Superintendent Ferguson said the officer, who had been a member of the police force for three years, was assigned to the Eight District and was supposed to be patrolling the French Quarter and the Central Business District (CBD) on July 22 when he quit, WVUE reported.

“It was disheartening, especially knowing the oath we take,” New Orleans’ top cop told reporters during a press conference at police headquarters on July 26.

“He abandoned his post,” he continued. “He just walked out on his brothers and sisters in blue. He abandoned the citizens of New Orleans. He abandoned this department.”

But the 23-year-old former officer that Superintendent Ferguson was talking told WVUE that he disagreed with that assessment.

Now-former New Orleans Police Officer Scott Fanning hit back in an interview and said his decision to leave was one of self-preservation.

“The reason I left is that something just kind of clicked for me, that it was just not worth it,” Fanning explained. “That night I quit, there were over 40 calls holding when I logged into my computer, and there were only 35 patrol officers logged in for all eight districts.”

The former officer said that the night he quit, there were less than three dozen patrol officers working the streets for a city with an estimated population of about 377,000, WVUE reported.

Fanning said the staffing shortage was the last straw and he made the decision that it would be his last night on the job.

“It was kind of sad,” he told WVUE.

The 23 year old from Northshore said he applied to the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) as soon as he hit the minimum age to qualify.

Police: Three 911 calls made before woman shot Clayton County officer, shootout with APD

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — Both a Clayton County officer and a suspect are in critical condition after after two officer-involved shootings overnight, police say.

According to Clayton County police, 25-year-old Aiyanah Pryor called 911 saying she was suicidal at 9:40 p.m. on Newbury Drive. Pryor’s mother called 911 just after 10 p.m. and a third call was made at 11 p.m.

Moments after Officer Demika Lloyd arrived on the scene, police say Pryor pulled out a gun and shot Officer Lloyd twice.

Other officers found the injured officer in the yard with multiple gunshot wounds. She was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital where she is currently in surgery, but still listed in critical condition.

Clayton County police say Pryor then got into a black Jeep and drove north on I-75 and into the city of Atlanta.

Atlanta officers received a call of a car matching the suspect’s vehicle description being spotted on Macon Dr. and Polar Rock Rd. SW. As officers approached the car, the suspect fired at least one shot and APD officers returned fire, hitting her multiple times.

The suspect was also taken to Atlanta Medical Center where she is listed in critical condition, but is stable.

No Atlanta police officers were injured in this second officer-involved shooting.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is currently at the Newbury Drive scene and is working to learn more details about the initial shooting.

“What you see here tonight is a demonstration of law enforcement’s dedication across this region and the quality of the men and women that wear the badge for their respective communities and I’m proud of the actions of the Atlanta Police Department this morning as they acted on behalf of this community,” Atlanta Interim Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said Thursday morning.

A Clayton County police spokesperson says the officer has been with their department for approximately a year-and-a-half.

State Police K-9 Frankie shot and killed during Fitchburg standoff

FITCHBURG – A State Police K-9, named Frankie, was shot and killed during a standoff in Fitchburg Tuesday afternoon. It happened at a multi-family home on Oliver Street. The suspect apparently shot and killed himself.

State Police were attempting to arrest 38-year-old Matthew Mack who had warrants stemming from a shooting on July 21 in Fitchburg.

The State Police STOP team and negotiators made multiple attempts to get Mack to surrender peacefully.

At about 2:48 p.m., K-9 Frankie and his handler, Sergeant David Stucenski, attempted to arrest Mack when he appeared at a rear exit of the house. Mack fired multiple shots toward police, striking Frankie. Mack then went back into the house.

Sgt. Stucenski was not injured.

VIDEO: Uvalde Cop Husband Of Teacher Held Back As He Tried To Rescue Her From Gunman

Uvalde, TX – Recently-released bodycam footage captured the moment when an Uvalde school district police officer was held back by law enforcement as he tried to get to his dying wife during the mass shooting inside her Robb Elementary School classroom (video below).

Eva Mireles, 44, had contacted her husband, Uvalde Consolidated Independent Schools District Police Department (UCISDPD) Officer Ruben Ruiz, after she was shot as she attempted to shield her students from the gunman’s barrage of bullets inside her classroom on May 24, Texas Representative Joe Moody (D – El Paso) tweeted on July 13.

Mireles told her husband “that she’d been shot and was dying,” Moody said

Recently-released bodycam footage showed Officer Ruiz as he pushed his way to the front of a group of law enforcement officers standing in the hallway outside the classroom where the gunman had his wife and her fourth-grade class held hostage.

“Hey hey hey – Ruben,” one officer said as another officer put his hand on Officer Ruiz’s shoulder and pulled him back.

“She says she’s shot!” Officer Ruiz protested.

Additional officers then escorted him out of the building, the clip showed.

By the time police stormed the classroom and killed the 18-year-old gunman, he’d been inside the school gunning down victims for more than an hour.

Nineteen children and two adults were murdered in the shooting.

Mireles was among the victims.
