As New York City mayor Eric Adams and the Democratic city council bicker over the forthcoming city budget for fiscal year 2024, due July 1, one progressive talking point — that out-of-control police spending consumes resources needed to fund schools, libraries, and mental-health care — is becoming a cliché.

Just one problem: As a share of the city’s budget, police spending isn’t growing.

In fact, it’s lower than it has been in 40 years.

Police spending isn’t crowding out education and social-services spending. The opposite is true, as my new paper for the Manhattan Institute reveals. If anything, education spending has crowded out police spending.

BREAKING: At Least One Trooper Shot By Armed Man Outside Police Barracks

Mifflintown, PA – At least one Pennsylvania State Trooper was shot in the line of duty on Saturday outside of a state police barracks in Juniata County.

Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) said the incident occurred on June 17 in the area of Troop G near the state police’s Lewistown Barracks, the Patriot-News reported.

Authorities said the trooper encountered an armed man outside of Troop G, and then the suspect opened fire on the law enforcement officer.

Felon Charged With Trying To Burn Down NYPD Precinct Stationhouse

Staten Island, NY – A Brooklyn woman has been arrested for allegedly recording video footage inside a New York Police station, then going back later to attempt to burn the building down while threatening to assault an officer.

The suspect, 39-year-old Yasmeya Mehmeti, is the wife of Enver Mehmeti, who is currently serving a 27-year federal prison sentence for leading a violent crew that distributed massive quantities of powder and crack cocaine in New Jersey and New Springville, the Staten Island Advance reported.

She also goes by the alias of Yasmeya Weeks-Meheti, according to police.

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Las Vegas Metro police arrested a man who threatened a mass shooting at the Stanley Cup Final hours before the Vegas Golden Knights clinched the championship, sources told Nexstar’s KLAS.

Just before noon on Tuesday, police responded to a Las Vegas business for a report of a person, later identified as Matthew DeSavio, 33, who was threatening a mass shooting at the Stanley Cup Final, documents said.

Tempe Police Officer Wins Miss Arizona

Tempe, AZ – A 27-year-old Tempe police officer has been crowned Miss Arizona 2023 and will represent the Grand Canyon State in the Miss USA pageant later this year.

The Tempe Police Department (TPD) heralded 27-year-old TPD Officer Candace Kanavel’s big win on Facebook on June 7.

“Join me in congratulating Tempe PD’s own, Officer Kanavel!” the post read. “From Miss Tempe to Miss Arizona USA, your PD family is extremely proud of you! #YesSheCan”

Officer Kanavel, who has a degree in political science and criminal justice, told KSAZ she is thrilled to be a role model for Arizona teens.

She said there many parallels between her work as a crisis-intervention-trained hostage negotiator for the TPD SWAT team and her pageant career.
