Ohio Deputy Shot In The Face, Still Takes Out The Suspect

*****SC deputy killed after being shot in ambush, sheriff says

Lima, OH – An Allen County sheriff’s deputy was shot in the face during a traffic stop early Tuesday morning.

The incident began at approximately 2:30 a.m. on June 21, when an unidentified Allen County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) deputy attempted to stop a vehicle on 2nd Street, the sheriff’s office said in a press release.

The driver “immediately fled the scene,” leading the deputy on a brief pursuit that ended several blocks away, according to the ACSO.

The suspect then bailed out of the vehicle and took off on foot.

The deputy chased the suspect down, leading to a physical struggle between them, the ACSO said.

The sheriff’s office said deputy and the suspect exchanged gunfire during the confrontation.

The gunman died from his wounds, and the deputy was shot in the face.

The wounded deputy was rushed to Lima Memorial Health System for emergency care before being transferred to a hospital in the Columbus area, according to the ACSO.

Ohio Attorney General’s Office Press Secretary Steve Irwin said the deputy’s injuries appear to be serious, but that they are not believed to be life threatening, The Lima News reported.

Two Uvalde officers had chance to shoot gunman, sheriff’s deputy says

Two Uvalde city police officers passed up a fleeting chance to shoot a gunman outside Robb elementary school before he went on to kill 21 people inside the school, a senior sheriff’s deputy told the New York Times.

That would mean a second missed opportunity for officers to stop Salvador Ramos before the 24 May attack inside the school that killed 19 children and two teachers. Officials said that a school district police drove past Ramos without seeing him in the school parking lot.

The unidentified officers, one of whom was armed with an AR-15-style rifle, said they feared hitting children playing in the line of fire outside the school, Chief Deputy Ricardo Rios of nearby Zavalla county told the newspaper.

The officers’ chance of stopping the gunman passed quickly, perhaps in seconds, Rios said.

Two LA-area police officers shot and killed responding to stabbing

Two police officers — one a 22-year-veteran and the other a rookie — were shot and killed in the Los Angeles County city of El Monte late Tuesday afternoon, authorities said. The suspect is also dead. The mayor said the officers were “essentially ambushed.”

The shooting occurred at about 4:45 p.m. local time when El Monte officers responded to a report of a stabbing at a motel. When they arrived, they “immediately took gunfire,” police said.

The two officers were rushed to a hospital where they later died, police said.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said the suspect was shot and died at the scene. He wasn’t publicly identified, CBS Los Angeles reports.

El Monte police said one officer was a 22-year veteran and the other was with the department less than a year.

City officials said the two officers were responding to a domestic violence report between a boyfriend and girlfriend.

According to police, the shootout started in the motel room. The suspect then fled into the motel parking lot, where another shootout occurred.

“As our officers do on a daily basis, they were acting as the first line of defense for our community members when they were essentially ambushed while trying to keep a family safe,” said El Monte Mayor Jessica Ancona.

She said the veteran officer grew up and attended the school in the city.

“They paid the ultimate sacrifice serving their community trying to help somebody,” Lowry remarked. “They do what hundreds of thousands of men and women do every day across the United States. They took an oath to protect people and to serve them. These two heroes paid the ultimate sacrifice. They were murdered by a coward.”

“We are grieving and it hurts,” Lowry said.
