Quincy, CA – An off-duty Plumas County sheriff’s deputy was nearly shot in the face by an intruder who broke into his home and hid in the law enforcement officer’s bathroom to wait for him on Sunday night.
The incident occurred at a residence in the Quincy area at approximately 9:30 p.m. on June 25, the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) said in a press release on Monday.
Investigators said an off-duty PCSO deputy arrived home and headed into his bathroom, but when he flipped on the light, a man with a semiautomatic handgun pointed the weapon at his face.
The intruder, later identified as 25-year-old San Jose resident Henry Maxwell Evans, then pulled the trigger, according to the deputy.
Although the weapon was loaded, Evans apparently forgot to chamber a round before trying to murder the deputy.
“The Deputy reacted quickly, subduing Evans using defensive tactics, dislodging the firearm from Evans,” the PCSO said.
After disarming his would-be killer, the deputy gained control of him and yanked him out of the bathroom and away from the firearm, investigators said.

After investigating throughout the day Sunday, Kansas City police say a “subject of interest’ has been taken into custody regarding an overnight shooting that left three people dead and five more hospitalized.
Police in Kansas City, Missouri, were called to investigate a shooting just after 4:30 a.m. near 57th Street and Prospect Avenue.
Police found three shooting victims in a parking lot and the street just south of the intersection. Those three victims, two men and one woman, died at the scene.
Officers say at least five more shooting victims arrived at various hospitals by private vehicles or ambulances. Police say they have non-life-threatening injuries.
As a result of their investigation, police identified a subject of interest at a residence in the 5300 block of Martha Truman Road in Grandview, Missouri.
Detectives responded to that location just after 5 p.m. and took an adult man into custody without incident for further investigation.
The investigation is ongoing, and detectives will be working this evening to gather investigative findings to present a case to prosecutors for consideration of applicable charges.

A metro Atlanta police department is receiving backlash after posting images and video on social media of a Black man being used on a poster as a target during a firearms safety class.
The video and images show officers with the Villa Rica Police Department holding a firearms safety class earlier this month where civilians are seen firing shots at posters with an African American man on them.
