SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. — A gunfight between police and a man inside a home in east Tennessee left him dead and wounded a K-9 police dog named Hank, who is recovering from surgery, authorities said Saturday.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation did not say if police gunfire killed the man, 63-year-old David Wright, who was found dead inside the house. The bureau said an autopsy would determine the manner and cause of death.
A second person in the home was hospitalized with unspecified injuries. The bureau’s news release did not identify the injured person.
Officers went to the house in Sevierville on Friday night after a felony in which someone evaded police in a vehicle, the bureau said. Someone inside the home fired at the officers, who shot back. The bureau is investigating the shooting.
Sevierville city spokesperson Bob Stahlke said Hank the K-9 officer underwent surgery for a gunshot wound and was transferred to a veterinary clinic in Knoxville.
The Belgian Malinois was later sent home to recuperate with his police handler, Stahlke said.
Two sheriffโs deputies and one city officer were treated for minor injuries that were not caused by gunshots, the bureau said. They were not identified.
Sevierville is north of Great Smoky Mountains National Park and about a half-hour drive from Knoxville.

The cityโs police watchdog is investigating the NYPD over its call not to arrest Daniel Penny in the chokehold death of Jordan Neely on the subway last week.
The cityโs police watchdog is investigating the NYPD over its call not to arrest Daniel Penny in the chokehold death of Jordan Neely on the subway last week, The Post has learned.
A spokeswoman for Civilian Complaint Review Board confirmed Thursday that a complaint had been filed with the agency and a formal probe was under way to see if there was any wrongdoing in the decision not to charge Penny, 24, after he was questioned by cops following Neelyโs death on May 1.
Pennyโs release sparked backlash, with protesters and lawmakers calling for his arrest. Heโs now set to turn himself in to cops Friday to face a second-degree manslaughter charge.
The CCRB would see if there was evidence of misconduct by the officers or supervisors involved in the decision to release Penny without charges. No such evidence has emerged.
The agency recently substantiated a complaint that NYPD Chief of Department Jeff Maddrey abused his authority by ordering a Brooklyn precinct sergeant to void the arrest of an ex-cop accused of flashing a gun at three teens in 2021.

A Connecticut man is behind bars after authorities said he told a state trooper he “kills cops,” threatened to kill the trooper, drove over 100 miles per hour in a police chase, and later pulled a knife on arresting troopers.
What are the details?
An on-duty state police sergeant in plain clothes with his state police badge displayed was entering his assigned vehicle in Hartford around 10:30 a.m. April 24 when the male driver of a silver Honda Accord began to shout at the sergeant and asked if he was โa cop,” state police said.
After the sergeant replied affirmatively, the male in the car declared that he โkills cops,” police said, after which the male threatened to kill the sergeant.
The sergeant approached the Honda and gave verbal commands to the male with the intent of taking him into custody, police said. As the male drove off, the sergeant took note of the car’s license plate, after which the male “came to a stop a short distance away, where [he] leaned out the vehicleโs window, displayed an obscene hand gesture and yelled profanities at the sergeant before continuing westbound on Asylum Street,” police said.
The sergeant later spotted the male and turned on his emergency lights and siren โ but the male took off “in a reckless and erratic manner at speeds in excess of 100 m.p.h. In the interest of public safety, efforts to stop the Honda were terminated in the area of I-91 southbound in the area of Exit 28,” police said.
Authorities identified the suspect as 29-year-old Raymond Lapinski of Hartford, adding that a “database check revealed that Lapinski was also the subject of active arrest warrants” from local police departments, police said.
Police found Lapinski in Hartford just after 9 a.m. April 25, police said, adding that troopers ordered him to the ground.
Instead, Lapinski “reached toward his waistband and retrieved a knife,” police said, after which troopers drew their guns.
Perhaps the futility of bringing a knife to a gunfight began to click. Indeed, police said at that moment, “Lapinski complied with orders to drop the knife.”
The battle wasn’t quite over, however. Police said Lapinski began resisting attempts to place him in a police cruiser, “becoming combative with troopers and yelling obscenities.” Police said the sergeant Lapinski was accused of initially threatening and a state police detective suffered minor injuries during the struggle.
