MASS. STATE POLICE STATEMENTS: (5:35 a.m.) We are currently on scene for an ongoing situation involving several armed persons on Route 95 in Wakefield. We currently have Route 95 shutdown between Lynnfield and Stoneham. We are asking residents of Wakefield and Reading to shelter in place at this time. The situation is fluid. Media responding to the ongoing situation on Route 95 are directed to stage at the 99 Restaurant parking lot, 10 Main St., Stoneham. UPDATE 1 (5:41 a.m.) We have several armed persons accounted for at this scene on Rt 95. They are refusing to comply with orders to provide their information and put down their weapons. We are asking residents of Wakefield and Reading to shelter in place at this time. Media are asked to report to the staging area and not to try to get closer to the scene for safety reasons.
UPDATE 2 (6:41 a.m.) Two suspects are in custody. They were observed and arrested by members of the Northeast Metropolitan Law Enforcement Council on North Avenue in Wakefield. MSP has taken custody of the suspects and transported them to one of our barracks. The situation is ongoing with the remaining members of the group. We continue to work to resolve the situation peacefully.
UPDATE 3 (7:13 a.m.) TENTATIVE — We are looking at holding a media briefing in approximately 1 hour at the staging area at the 99 in Stoneham. I will confirm as we get closer to the time.

UPDATE 5 (10:30 a.m.) Remaining suspects on highway have been taken into custody by MSP Special Tactical Operations Team. Seven additional suspects being transported for booking. We will now conduct sweeps of their 2 vehicles and woods. Total of 9 in custody counting the initial two arrested. We will let you know when briefing will be. The bill would reverse a current law that bars first responders from transporting working animals in most situations

BOSTON — After two Braintree police officers were shot and injured in a shoot-out that killed police dog Kitt, officials are calling for the passage of a law that would allow emergency personnel to treat and bring police dogs to an animal hospital.
The bill, dubbed Nero’s law, was named after Yarmouth police dog Nero, who was injured when his handler Sgt. Sean Gannon was killed in a 2018 shooting. The bill would reverse a current law that prohibits first responders from treating or transporting working animals in most situations.
Nero survived, but had to wait for treatment because the EMTs at the scene were not allowed to help. Kitt, a 12-year veteran, was shot and killed while engaging with an armed suspect earlier this month.
The bill was proposed by state Rep. Steven Xiarhos, who was Yarmouth’s deputy police chief at the time of Gannon’s death.
“The Nero bill is critically important and very personal to me,” Xiarhos said in an email. “I personally attended the funeral of K-9 Kitt and saw the pain in the eyes of the police officers that he saved that horrible day back on June 4.”
Xiarhos said that he retired to run for office because of Gannon’s death. The Yarmouth Republican said the bill has wide bipartisan support and awaiting a hearing date from of the Legislature’s Joint Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security.
“These animals deserve to be treated when injured and we must make this a reality,” Xiarhos said. “Their lives matter.”
Braintree Police Deputy Chief Tim Cohoon called the bill a “no-brainer.”

Washington, DC – Democrats believe “rising gun sales” and “systemic racism” are to blame for the nationwide spike in crime, but they also think police are “too tough” on most criminals, according to a new poll.
Yahoo News/YouGov conducted the survey of 1,592 U.S. adults between June 22 and June 24 and found that 55 percent of Americans described “violent crime” as “a very big problem” in this country, Yahoo News reported.
The poll revealed that number was six percent higher than it was in May, and showed it wasn’t just Republican voters who were worried about skyrocketing crime.
Only 45 percent of Democrats called violent crime “a very big problem” in May, but that number jumped to 53 percent in June, Yahoo News reported.
Republicans who felt the same way went from 56 percent in May to 65 percent in June.
In May, 43 percent of Americans disapproved of how President Joe Biden was handling the crime problem in the United States, Yahoo News reported.
