1 officer fatally shot, 4 injured in 10-hour Texas standoff with barricaded suspect

“The Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the loss of one of our own tonight, SWAT Commander Sgt. Josh Bartlett,”

July 16 (UPI) — A west Texas county sheriff’s sergeant was fatally shot and four other law enforcement agents were wounded in a shootout that erupted when confronting a suspect who had barricaded himself in a residence, authorities said.

“The Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the loss of one of our own tonight, SWAT Commander Sgt. Josh Bartlett,” the office said in a statement.

Police chief Albert Garcia of Levelland, west of Lubbock, told reporters during a press briefing that a second officer, Levelland police Sgt. Shawn Wilson, was in stable but critical condition after undergoing surgery.

The other injured officers, he said, were treated and released.

The Levelland Police Department said earlier that four law enforcement officers had been wounded, including two critically.

“In my career, it’s almost been 30 yeas in my career, and I have been through some pretty treacherous types of situations before in the past, but never have I lost anybody or never have I been a chief of police where I’ve had a member of my team be injured as severely as they have been today,” he said.

Garcia said the suspect, 22-year-old Omar Soto-Chavira, was taken into custody at around 11:30 p.m. and was transported to a local hospital to treat his undisclosed injuries.

The more than 10-hour standoff began after 1 p.m. Thursday when police were called to a residence in Levelland about a person “acting strange and walking around with what appeared to be a large gun,” a Garcia said in an earlier press briefing.

Not long after police arrived and contacted the suspect, he re-entered the residence and opened fire, Garcia said.

Bartlett was shot shortly after arriving on the scene to assist local police at 2:15 p.m. and was transported to Covenant Medical Center in Levelland where he was later pronounced dead, the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office said.

Lubbock County Sheriff Kelly Rowe described the residence to reporters as a mobile home and said they were able to take the suspect into custody with the use of a robot and gas that flushed him from the bathroom into an open area where he surrendered to police.

Lubbock County Judge Curtis Parrish has ordered for flags on all county buildings to be lowered to half-staff in Bartlett’s honor.

“This terrible loss is a solemn reminder of the risks our brave law enforcement officers face while protecting our communities,” he said in a statement. “I ask all Lubbock County citizens to join us in praying for his family, for healing for the other officers who were injured in the standoff and for the entire Lubbock County Sheriff’s Department.”

‘Who wants to be a cop?’

‘Who wants to be a cop?’: New series takes deep dive into Fla. police academy

Journalists at the Tampa Bay Times spent six months shadowing police recruits. This is their story

By Suzie Ziegler

TAMPA, Fla. — A new series from the Tampa Bay Times asks one simple question: in an age of police reckoning, who wants to be a cop?

To find an answer, Times journalists spent nearly six months at St. Petersburg College’s Law Enforcement Academy. There they were given permission to observe training as cadets tackled physical challenges and grappled with a national attitude shift about policing. The result is an eight-part series that takes a deep and poignant dive into the police recruit experience in 2021.

The first three chapters are available now, with a new chapter released daily through July 18.

According to the paper, the academy director allowed Times journalists to drop into classes and training at any time. They were present for most of the scenes described in the series and interviewed other attendees when they were not. The coaches provided copies of cadets’ textbooks, tests and slideshows. The journalists also closely followed three cadets, who shared their essays, presentations and test scores.

In the first installment, recruits explained in their own words why they chose to attend the academy.

“I want to come home at the end of the day and know I made a difference,” said Hannah Anhalt, a 25-year-old criminal justice major at the University of Central Florida.

Another recruit described having positive interactions with police while growing up in a rough family. Others want to be heroes, find camaraderie, mirror their mentors and save juveniles from sex trafficking.

These 30 recruits are mostly white and male, says the Times, but their class is still the most diverse yet: seven women, five Black people, two Latinos. Their instructor, identified as Coach Saponare, says he expected applications to plummet after last year’s protests. Instead, more people than ever applied.

Violent Results of the Defund the Police Movement

This isn’t rocket science. If you reduce the number of cops in high crime areas and handcuff the remaining officers you will not be saving black lives. Instead, you will turn your streets into rivers of blood and your cities into war zones where no one will want to live and work. Many of these areas are predominately African American, and you know damn well they will be the innocent victims of your war on law and order.

Again, these Democrats may be mentally deficient but they fully understand what defunding the police will result in. They are culpable and they should be held responsible for the growing violence.

Look at the backgrounds of these politicians and thugs running the anti cop groups. They are Marxist radicals doing what Marxist thugs have done everywhere else. They must eliminate the rule of law to protect their own crimes and tyranny and to enforce their agendas by mob rule. Wake up.

Op-ED: Democrats open door to Marxist totalitarian rule …

How will the police be abolished? A Marxist perspective

To abolish capitalist law enforcement would therefore require first to abolish capitalist law itself. The struggle to eliminate the existing police forces thus must be approached as part of a revolutionary struggle to overthrow capitalism and class society, and to replace the existing state with a socialist government and system. Under the name of abolitionism there are many valuable endeavors to transform interpersonal relations, to reconceive of state and activist responses to different forms of harm, to divest from police budgets and invest in social needs, among others. But the abolition of the capitalist state also requires a program for revolution, where the oppressed seize and hold power and the oppressors lose power.

City Suspends Cop For Making Anti-BLM Posts, Now He’s Suing For $1 Million

Sparks, NV – A veteran Sparks police officer has filed a $1 million lawsuit against the city for allegedly violating his First Amendment rights after he was suspended over social media posts he made about antifa and Black Lives Matter (BLM).

Sparks Police Officer George Forbush, a bomb squad technician with 19 years on the force, filed the 32-page lawsuit in federal court in Reno in April, KRNV reported.

Officer Forbush was previously given a four-day, unpaid suspension as punishment for four social media posts he made, including at least one that referenced antifa and BLM.

According to the lawsuit, he suffered emotional, psychological and reputational harms due to the disciplinary action, which he argued could also damage his employment opportunities post-retirement, KRNV reported.

Officer Forbush was off-duty when he made the posts and made no reference to his job as an SPD officer in any of them, according to the lawsuit.

He is seeking $1 million in damages.

“A public employer may not discipline or retaliate against its employees for the content of their political speech as private citizens on matters of public concern,” the lawsuit reads, according to the Associated Press. “Officer Forbush did not relinquish his right to think, care, and speak about politics and current events when he accepted a job as a police officer.”

The investigation into Officer Forbush began after an anonymous tipster sent city officials a tweet the officer posted in June of 2020, KRNV reported.

“I am going to build a couple AR pistols just for BLM, Antifa or active shooters who cross my path and can’t maintain social distancing,” the tweet read, according to the news outlet.

The city combed through more than 700 of Officer Forbush’s tweets before determining that a total of four warranted disciplinary action, the Associated Press reported.

Another post showed a group of people trying to light a U.S. flag on fire, along with a comment from the veteran officer, the Reno Gazette Journal reported.

“I would be a helper and throw a lot of gasoline in their direction as they held their lighters and they say oops as I walked away,” he wrote.

Another post involved Officer Forbush reacting to a photo of a man exposing himself in a public area, the Reno Gazette Journal reported.

“Next time put him in some cross-hairs or on a red dot, please,” he said.

Officer Forbush also made a post blasting a police officer who had been accused of falsifying evidence, the Reno Gazette Journal reported.

“He made a lot of good cops look bad. It would be ironic if someone planted drugs by cramming them up his a– so they could be found during an intake search when he goes to prison for what he did. That would be the tip of the iceberg on the punishment scale,” the post read.

Officer Forbush was placed on administrative leave on Aug. 18, 2020, while the investigation was being conducted, the Reno Gazette Journal reported.

He was sanctioned to four days of unpaid leave on Dec. 4, 2020.

According to the city’s social media policy, “employees and elected officials should not post discriminatory remarks, harassing statements, and threats of violence or any language that can be viewed as malicious, obscene, threatening or intimidating toward fellow employees, citizens, or vendors,” the Associated Press reported.

The lawsuit described Officer Forbush’s case as a “warning broadcast to all city employees that they had better not say anything, anywhere, in any forum, even in their personal social media discussions of matters of public concern.”

According to the lawsuit, Officer Forbush is also asking the court to order the city to “implement a policy governing officers’ personal social media use that is consistent with the Constitution,” and to have the disciplinary action associated with the incident purged from his personnel file, the Associated Press reported.

NYPD officer wounded in Brooklyn shootout with gangbanger identified

The NYPD officer who was wounded in a Brooklyn shootout with a known gangbanger has been identified as Brian McGurran, officials said Thursday.

McGurran, who joined the NYPD in April 2017 and was assigned to the 81st Precinct, was shot three times in the gunfight around 11:15 p.m. Wednesday in Bushwick.

Mayor Bill de Blasio hailed the 28-year-old officer as a hero Thursday morning and praised the NYPD’s policing strategies that got the alleged gunman off the street.

“This is an example of the dangers our officers face but also a profound example of the heroism and courage they exhibit, how much we depend on them and the smart strategies of the NYPD to have officers where they are needed,” de Blasio said.

Police Commissioner Dermot Shea said McGurran, along with a sergeant and other cops in the 81st Precinct, spotted a man “walking briskly” and “blading his body” near Macon Street and Howard Avenue.

When the cops got out of the car, the man with “a firearm turns on the officers and begins to shoot,” Shea said.

McGurran, who lives in Smithtown, Long Island, was hit in the bulletproof vest, the buttocks and right leg, Shea said.

He was taken to Kings County Hospital Center and was expected to be released Thursday afternoon.

A bullet hole is seen in a car window at the scene of the shooting.

De Blasio said the officers were near the Brooklyn park because there had been previous violence in the area.

“That’s what precision policing is,” he said. “This assailant committed an act of violence and literally ran into the NYPD patrol.

“Officer Brian McGurran, a heroic officer, [was] out there protecting us.”

The alleged shooter, Boyce Hayward, was taken into custody after being hit once in the leg by gunfire. The 26-year-old was also taken to Kings County Hospital Center.

“This is a story that ends, thank God, with our officer — who, although is wounded and our thoughts and prayers are with his family — is expected to make a full recovery,” de Blasio said.
