‘Chilling’ video: Man runs around pointing gun at officers, bystanders

Springfield’s police commissioner praised officers for showing “incredible and courageous restraint”

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — A 43-year-old man was arrested Sunday night, accused of firing about five rounds from a stolen gun and then threatening Springfield police officers and bystanders with it as he tried to run away.

The police department’s Real-Time Analysis Center released video footage from city cameras on Monday showing the encounter before the arrest. During the 3-minute footage, a man can be seen repeatedly waving the gun near 100 High St. where at least five people were walking. He then turned the gun toward police when they arrived, said Ryan Walsh, police spokesman.

No one was injured.

Jose Montanez, of Springfield, was arrested on nine charges including two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, carrying a dangerous weapon on school grounds and possession of a firearm and ammunition without a license, Walsh said.

At about 7:25 p.m., the ShotSpotter system picked up five gunshots on the 100 block of High Street. The camera then showed a suspect waving a gun around as two males walked away and a third confronted him. At that point, a police cruiser arrived.

“When officers arrived Montanez began fleeing,” Walsh said. “But (he) continued to point his firearm in the direction of officers and bystanders. Responding officers immediately observed that the firearm’s slide was locked in the rear, which typically indicates that a firearm is out of ammunition or unable to be fired unless the slide (is) moved forward.”

Police could see he was carrying an additional magazine for ammunition in his waistband, Walsh said.

At least two officers chased the man as he ran away. Several times he turned around, running backwards, and is accused of continuing to point the gun. At one point he dropped the gun but picked it back up, the footage showed.

Soon after, at least a half-dozen officers arrived to assist, and they all moved outside range of the camera.

“Montanez continued evading officers,” Walsh said. “He ran to the back of the High School of Commerce on State Street where he allegedly tossed his firearm on school property before being taken into custody by responding officers without further incident.”

The gun, which was recovered by officers, was reportedly stolen out of Ludlow, Walsh said.

“The outcome of this call is a huge credit to all of the officers on scene who showed incredible and courageous restraint in this situation, and, due to their keen observation during a fast-moving incident, were able to avoid an officer-involved-shooting,” Springfield Police Commissioner Cheryl C. Clapprood said.

“Reloading or moving the slide forward only takes a moment and likely would have had a much different end result,” she said. “The brazen actions of this suspect put in jeopardy the lives of our officers, several bystanders and himself and is an example of some of the most unpredictable, volatile and dangerous calls our officers respond to. This situation could have changed at any moment, and we are fortunate it ended as it did.”

Montenez has had previous encounters with police, Walsh said. He was scheduled to appear in Springfield District Court on Monday but information about his arraignment was not available.

“After reviewing this most chilling video, these officers showed tremendous restraint in not firing their weapons in this foot chase to subdue this violent offender, who was firing off his gun and pointing at officer’s numerous times,” Mayor Domenic J. Sarno said in a statement. “Those officers and residents were put in harm’s way and a very traumatic situation – they could have been injured or God forbid killed. Is this what it is coming to? Our courts are holding no one accountable, especially repeat violent criminal offenders who are allowed to run roughshod on our streets and neighborhoods, while our brave and dedicated men and women in blue risk their lives with arrest after arrest after arrest to keep all our residents and business community safe. Now the big question – will our courts hold him or just ‘pat him on the head’ and release him right back to our streets and in our neighborhoods.”

Gunman Accused Of Repeatedly Shooting Iowa Deputy Gets Captured

BREAKING: Deputy Shot Multiple Times Responding To Robbery

Coggon, IA – The suspect accused of shooting a Linn County sheriff’s deputy during an armed robbery at a gas station on Sunday night has been apprehended, according to police.

The Linn County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) confirmed early Monday afternoon that 36-year-old Chicago resident Stanley Donahue has been taken into custody.

Shortly before his arrest, the sheriff’s office issued an alert describing Donahue as “a person of interest” and warned he should be “considered armed and dangerous.”

Details regarding Donahue’s apprehension have not been released.

It is unclear what charges he might face.

“Outstanding efforts by multiple agencies resulted in this person being taken into custody without further violence,” Linn County Sheriff Brian Gardner tweeted. “This is [cooperative] law enforcement at its best.”

The attack occurred at Casey’s General Store located at 5110 Highway 13 at approximately 10:19 p.m. on Sunday, the LCSO said in a press release.

Deputies responded to the store after receiving a report of an alarm at that location.

LCSO said that when one of the deputies entered the building, “he was immediately met by an armed suspect.”

The gunman fired multiple rounds at the deputy, striking him several times.

The shooter then fled the scene in a van, the LCSO said.

Another responding deputy spotted the suspect vehicle and began pursuing the alleged gunman, who ultimately crashed on North 3rd Street and took off on foot.

A LCSO K9 tracked the suspect to the area of Highway 13 and Aldrich Road, where he lost his scent, according to the department.

Multiple agencies from across northeast Iowa responded to the area to assist in the manhunt.

The sheriff’s office issued a tweet overnight asking residents to stay inside and to keep their doors and vehicles locked.

The wounded deputy was airlifted to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics with serious injuries, the LCSO said.

He was listed in stable condition on Monday afternoon.

“This was a tragic and needless shooting that resulted in serious injuries to one of our deputies who was merely doing his job to protect the citizens of Linn County,” Sheriff Gardner said in the press release.

Casey’s General Store spokesperson Katie Petru said no employees were injured during the armed robbery or the shooting, the Dallas County News reported.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the deputy who was shot during this horrific event,” Petru said. “We are also focused on our team members and ensuring they have the support they need.”

The last time a KCSO deputy was shot in the line of duty was in 1973, Sheriff Gardner told the Dallas County News.

100 National Guard Activated After Minneapolis Mayor Requests Help Over Protests

When you start treating these “protesters” for what they truly are- Paid Marxist Domestic Terrorists who do not legally protest but illegally gather and destroy city blocks and attack innocents.

ENOUGH! These are not “Protests” no matter how many times your paid talking heads repeat the lie on TV. These are terrorists- treat them accordingly!

Minneapolis, MN – The Minnesota National Guard activated 100 members of the 257th Military Police Company on Wednesday on the orders of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz to be deployed if Minneapolis law enforcement needs assistance.

Walz took the action on June 16 after two weeks of protests following the officer-involved fatal shooting of Winston “Boogie” Smith led to the death of a protester who was run down while blocking a roadway, KMSP reported.

Protests erupted after Smith was fatally shot by members of a U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) task force on June 3 who were trying to arrest him on a warrant for gun charges.

The task force, which was largely made up of local law enforcement but did not include any Minneapolis police officers, said the suspect was sitting in a parked car when officers tried to take him into custody, KSTP reported.

USMS said the fugitive ignored officers’ commands and drew a handgun, according to Reuters.

“During the incident, the subject, who was in a parked car, failed to comply and produced a handgun resulting in task force members firing upon the subject,” the official USMS statement read.

Smith was fatally shot and pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, KSTP reported.

State investigators have said there is no bodycam, dashcam, or security camera video from the incident.

Court documents showed that Smith was a career criminal with 20 convictions for minor offenses, three drug-related convictions, and an aggravated robbery conviction for beating his former girlfriend’s face to a pulp, FOX News reported.

Despite his checkered past, activists have gathered every day for the two weeks since Smith died to protest his death.

On Sunday night, a female protester was killed when a man believed to be under the influence drove his SUV through a group of protesters blocking the intersection at West Lake Street and Girard Avenue South near where Smith was shot.

Witnesses said the driver of the SUV was going at a high rate of speed and appeared to accelerate before he slammed into the protesters, Minnesota Public Radio reported.

On Wednesday, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey asked the governor for help, FOX News reported.

Frey sent a letter to Walz on June 16 that asked that “the state make Minnesota National Guard assets available to assist in ensuring calm and order throughout the city, without immediately being deployed,” according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported.

It was at least the fifth time that the Minneapolis mayor has asked the governor to send in the National Guard since George Floyd died on May 25, 2020.

Hours after receiving the letter, Walz told reporters he “gave the Minnesota National Guard a warning order to start preparing to assist local law enforcement should they need help,” the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported.

The ultimate cleaner and lubricant

The city said that Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo has requested National Guardsmen be partnered with teams of law enforcement officers if they are deployed to the city again, FOX News reported.

Chief Arradondo requested that members of the National Guard be assigned to property protection details and traffic control, rather than getting involved in crowd control and taking on protesters.
