Austin, TX – Austin Police Department (APD) Officer Lewis “Andy” Traylor died in the line of duty on Saturday, three days after crashing into an 18-wheeler while responding to a priority call for help.
Officer Traylor, 37, was traveling westbound along FM 969 on his way to an emergency call when the collision occurred at approximately 2:10 a.m., the Austin American-Statesman reported.
The driver of an 18-wheeler attempted to make a U-turn in front of him, causing Officer Traylor to crash into the truck and pinning his patrol car beneath it, police said.
The veteran officer was extricated from the wreckage and rushed to Dell Seton Medical Center, the Austin American-Statesman reported.
The driver of the semi-truck was not injured in the collision and has been cooperating with the ongoing investigation, the Austin American-Statesman reported.
