323 officers shot in the line of duty in 2022: Police union

On July 6 of this year, Detroit police officer Loren Courts responded to a call for a shooting on Marlowe Street. When police arrived, the 19-year-old suspect shot and killed Courts while he was arriving in his cruiser, according to police.

At his memorial service, Courts, whose father was a retired Detroit Police Department officer, was lauded for his work.

“He was the person others leaned on and sought for advice. He had a calming influence within the precinct and on the street. I do not ever recall seeing him rattled or not on point,” one of his fellow officers said,ย accordingย to local reports. “He was a consummate professional who was the epitome of what a Detroit police officer should be.”.

Courts was one of the 323 police officers shot in the line of duty this year, according to statistics released by the National Fraternal Order of Police, one of the largest police unions in the country, on Wednesday.

A funeral caisson transports the casket of Raleigh Police Officer Gabriel Torres to Cross Assembly Church in Raleigh, N.C. for his funeral, Oct. 22, 2022.

The numbers are up 7% from 2020 and 13% from 2019, according to the FOP. In total, 60 law enforcement officers were killed by gunfire in 2022, the FOP reports. The numbers are down from 2021, however, which was a record-breaking year.

Honoring Officers Killed in 2022

Total Line of Duty Deaths: 224

“Last year we saw more officers shot in the line of duty than any other since the National Fraternal Order of Police began recording this data in late 2015, and this year is not far behind,” FOP President Patrick Yoes said in a statement. “If these violent criminals are willing to commit brazen acts of violence against the men and women of law enforcement, we can’t begin to fathom what heinous acts they are willing to commit against law-abiding citizens. As crime rates continue to rise, more citizens in this country are justifiably living in fear, constantly wondering if they too will become a victim.”

Texas, followed by Arizona, Georgia and California, had the most officers shot in 2022.

“Every felonious attack on a law enforcement officer, especially by gunfire, is disturbing regardless of the circumstances,” the report said.

Of concern, the union said, 124 law enforcement officers were shot in “ambush” style attacks, which lead to more than half the deaths in 2022. The union said the year-end report will be released in mid-January.

Police, FBI plan update on deadly Indiana mall shooting

FBI take time out from trying to flake Trump and censor Conservatives on Social Media to investigate a real crime.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) โ€” Five months after a 20-year-old man shot five people, three of them fatally, at a suburban Indianapolis mall, police and the FBI could shed light this week on the gunmanโ€™s motive.

The Greenwood Police Department announced that the department and the FBI will discuss the July 17 shooting at a Wednesday morning news conference. Officer Jason Grable said Tuesday that the department cannot discuss in advance what information will be released.

FBI spokeswoman Chris Bavender said the federal agency will provide an update on efforts to extract data from gunman Jonathan Douglas Sapirmanโ€™s cellphone and his laptop, both of which had been damaged. She declined to comment further on Tuesday.

Sapirman, 20, of Greenwood was fatally shot by an armed shopper shortly after he opened fire in the food court of Greenwood Park Mall around the mallโ€™s closing time in the city just south of Indianapolis.

A married Indianapolis couple โ€” Pedro Pineda, 56, and Rosa Mirian Rivera de Pineda, 37 โ€” and Victor Gomez, 30, also of Indianapolis, were killed. A woman shot in the leg and a 12-year-old girl who was hit by shrapnel were wounded in the attack, police said.

The FBI said in August that data could not be recovered from a laptop Sapirman had placed in the oven at his apartment with a can of butane before leaving to commit the shooting. The oven was on and set at a high temperature that damaged the laptop beyond forensic analysis.

But the FBI said in August that it was still trying to analyze the cellphone, which police said Sapirman dropped in a toilet in a restroom at the mall before he opened fire.

The FBI and Greenwood police said in August that they were trying to determine a motive for Sapirmanโ€™s actions, and were also analyzing his social media and online presence to potentially uncover a motive.

Sapirman was facing eviction before he opened fire at the mall, where he had likely assembled in a bathroom the rifle that he used in the attack, Greenwood police said in August.

He was shot and killed by an armed bystander, 22-year-old Elisjsha Dicken, a Seymour, Indiana, man who had been at the mall shopping with his girlfriend. Greenwood Police Chief James Ison has said Dickenโ€™s quick action was โ€œnothing short of heroic.โ€

Authorities have said Dicken was legally armed. As of July 1, Indiana law allows anyone age 18 or older to carry a handgun in public, except for those prohibited for reasons such as having a felony conviction, facing a restraining order or having a dangerous mental illness as determined by a court.

While the mall prohibits people from carrying weapons on its property, the mall issued a statement two days after the shooting praising Dickenโ€™s โ€œheroic actionsโ€ and saying it grieves for the victims.

Why the media ignored female black cop Melvina Bogardโ€™s shooting of unarmed white man Ariel Roman

Chicago Police Officer Melvina Bogard was acquitted in the shooting of Ariel Roman after a struggle (pictured). But unlike cases of white cops shooting black victims, national press coverage was scant.

Late last month, Chicago Police Officer Melvina Bogard was acquitted of felony battery charges in the shooting of an unarmed man at a Chicago train station in 2020. While a handful of local media outlets reported on the story at the time, the case received far less attention than most in which a cop shoots a civilian.

Perhaps this has something to do with Bogardโ€™s race โ€” she is black and the shooting victim, Ariel Roman, is white. Whenever a white cop shoots and injures a black victim in the US, the media explodes with outrage, as journalists seek to prop up the narrative of systemic white supremacy and brutality within the police force. But there is far less appetite for the reverse scenario, even when that white victim isnโ€™t armed, doesnโ€™t appear to be a danger to police and is shot at close range.

The details around the Roman shooting are clear. On Feb. 8, 2020, officer Bogard and her partner, Bernard Butler, attempted to arrest Roman for illegally moving between train cars at the Grand Avenue stop on the Chicagoโ€™s Red Line train system.

COPA releases new videos of CPD shooting on Red Line
Ariel Roman was also found to be carrying an illegal amount of marijuana in his backpack.

In video footage compiled by The Chicago Sun-Times, Roman can be seen persistently resisting arrest. One of the officers screams โ€œstop resistingโ€ more than 10 times. Eventually the officers deploy their Tasers, yet Roman manages to remain on his feet. Bogard then pulls her gun and yells, โ€œSir, put your fโ€“king hands down!โ€ Butler, meanwhile, yells, โ€œShoot him!โ€

In a matter of seconds, Bogard shoots Roman in the stomach at point-blank range. Somehow Roman flees before she fires at him a second time in the back. Eventually, Roman, wounded and bloodied, is apprehended and arrested.

Blame for the shooting can be placed on both sides. Roman was clearly noncompliant โ€” he defied all of the officersโ€™ commands, forcing events to escalate. On the other hand, firing shots at Roman when he was just a few feet away feels excessive. Although Bogard claimed she shot Roman in self-defense, even her own police chief, David Brown, didnโ€™t buy that argument. He called for her to be fired for violating police protocol, saying deadly force was not necessary on a person who posed no serious threat to her or anyone nearby.

But whatโ€™s most noticeable in this case is the mediaโ€™s response to the shooting โ€” or, rather, its lack thereof. After the 2014 death of Eric Garner at the hands of NYPD cop Daniel Pantaleo, the media has scrutinized every instance of police overreach โ€” but only when the cops are white and the victims are black.

The Bogard case, which refused to conform to that ideology, barely registered.

Although some video footage from bystanders circulated through social media channels and a number of mostly local media outlets covered Bogardโ€™s acquittal, the story failed to grab the attention of national outlets like The New York Times, CNN and MSNBC. The case was almost completely ignored.

Meanwhile, white-cop/black-victim shootings, like those of Jacob Blake and Maโ€™Khia Bryant have instantly gone viral โ€” even though, in both cases, the cops were cleared of any wrongdoing. The notion that white police officers are brutal murderers of black victims (which most definitely was the case with Derek Chauvinโ€™s murder of George Floyd in May 2020) often fails to hold up in court.

In 2020, policy analyst Zach Goldberg researched racial bias in the media and showed that unarmed black victims of fatal police shootings generate nine times as many news search items as those about white victims. Mainstream media outlets have made coordinated โ€œeditorial decisionsโ€ to โ€œnormalize among their readership the belief that โ€˜colorโ€™ is the defining attribute of other human beings,โ€ Goldberg writes.

While it is true that a highly disproportionate number of black victims are shot by cops, unarmed white Americans comprise some 40% of police shooting victims. White victims have also been killed by cops in circumstances that mirror their black counterparts: grabbing their driverโ€™s license during a traffic stop (mistaken for a gun), not showing their hands upon request, and being pushed to the ground and suffocated to death while officers crack jokes.

But these arenโ€™t the stories that excite the media.

As the Ariel Roman shooting reveals, the importance of human suffering hinges on the race of the victim โ€” and its ability to be exploited for maximum ideological impact.
