13 former NYPD officers join Lakeland Police Dept., say more community support felt here

LAKELAND, Fla. (WFLA) – Former New York City police officer and lifelong New Yorker Jamie Smith says he can feel a difference one month into life in Lakeland.

“It’s been a different atmosphere. It’s like night and day. Since we’ve been in Florida, it’s like, so much support for law enforcement,” Smith said. “We do have our supporters in New York but they’re not the loudest voices.”

Smith is one of 13 former NYPD officers who have been hired at Lakeland Police Department in recent months. Twelve of the officers, including Smith, were part of a three-day recruitment trip Lakeland Police leadership took to New York in the spring.

They spent two days in Manhattan and one day in Long Island.

Off-Duty Chicago Cop Charged With Shooting At Carjackers Who Took Her SUV

Chicago, IL – An off-duty Chicago police officer is facing charges after she fired her weapon on Saturday at a group of carjackers that had just stolen her personal vehicle.

The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office said that Chicago Police Officer Oneta Sampson Carney was loading groceries into the back of her SUV with her husband when they were approached by three suspects.

Two of the suspects approached the couple and offered them assistance, distracting Carney and her husband long enough for the third suspect to jump into the driver’s sea

Prosecutors said the driver stopped the stolen SUV a short distance away to pick up his partners in crime and that’s when the off-duty officer pulled out her weapon and fired one shot at them.

Lindsey Graham Allegedly Told Police to Shoot Jan. 6 Rioters: ‘You’ve Got Guns. Use Them’

According to The Post, Graham, a Republican from South Carolina, was furious that senators were forced to flee their own chamber. He yelled at the sergeant-at-arms and urged him to shoot rioters in the mob, the newspaper reported, citing a Republican senator with knowledge of the exchange.

“What are you doing? Take back the Senate! You’ve got guns. Use them,” Graham reportedly shouted. He continued: “We give you guns for a reason. Use them.”
