Chuck Schwarz was railroaded in the infamous and horrific Abner Louima police brutality incident.
When this story broke, every cop I knew , myself included, laughed it off as a bullshyte allegation against an arresting officer. When it was revealed that it actually happened, cops were disgusted and shocked. Justin Volpe snapped and was obviously mentally ill. His act of brutality would cause mistrust for the entire department and create hell on earth for any cop working that night in the 7-0.
Incident in the 70th Precinct
It started with a mêlée outside a Haitian nightclub and ended with charges of unspeakable police brutality in a bathroom at the Brooklyn precinct once nicknamed Fort Tombstone. Talking to the cops, to investigators, and to family and supporters of the victim, Abner Louima, the author examines evidence of torture so sadistic it shocked the entire nation—and touched off an urban political war.
Chuck was punished by an overzealous prosecution because he would not say what he did not know and he would not lie.
HE WOULD NOT BREAK.
The lunatic cop responsible (Volpe) was found guilty and sentenced to 30 years.
But more cops were needed for sacrifice upon the alter of the court of political correctness and public opinion.
Volpe testified Schwarz was never in the bathroom repeatedly but they were hellbent on making an example of Chuck.
Volpe Repeats That Schwarz Wasn’t There
So began a long ordeal of prison and trials in which this ex-Marine held his ground and did not compromise himself . They would imprison him for “perjury”.

Steve would write column after column documenting Chuck’s ordeal and keeping him in the public eye.
Chuck was eventually freed in 2007. A complete travesty of justice. He was forced to take a vow of silence in exchange for his freedom.

Where were the great legal minds to condemn this travesty? One attorney on the prosecution’s team (Barry Scheck) used and abused our system to get OJ Simpson off despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.
What kind of legal system do we have???
Chuck adamantly maintained his innocence throughout, and the trial (I mean trials) showed much doubt as to his guilt. What was done in the 7-0 bathroom that night was horrendous. But that should not negate a fair trial. Only a NYC cop can be forced to renounce his freedom of speech and his claim of innocence to avoid being railroaded by the courts of the politically correct and public opinion.
